Central Decatur 40, Bedford 6
BEDFORD — Wyman Reed and Trenton Wells combined for six rushing touchdowns, leading Central Decatur to a 40-6 win over Bedford in the season opener Friday.
Reed rushed for 175 yards on 21 carries, averaging 8.3 yards per carry. He recorded a long touchdown run of 37 yards. Wells, meanwhile, picked up 57 yards on five carries for an average of 11.4 yards per carry. His long touchdown run went for 26 yards.
Sydney Smith kicked four extra points, combining with Reed and Wells to account for all of Central Decatur’s scoring in the win.
As a team, the Cardinals rushed for 270 yards. But, sophomore quarterback Peyton Pedersen was efficient through the air as well.
Pedersen finished 10-of-18 passing for 133 yards with two interceptions.
Wells led the Cardinals in receiving, catching six passes for 112 yards. Joey Marcus and Noah Bishop each caught two passes. Marcus totaled 18 yards and Bishop finished with 3 yards.
Defensively, junior Peyton Gilbert led the Cardinals with eight tackles, while seniors Daniel Weir and Monty Dowell made seven stops each. Marcus, Conner Welch and Trenton Wells each finished with six tackles.
Wells also recorded a solo sack in the win.
Central Decatur held Bedford to just 150 yards of total offense - 48 through the air and 102 on the ground.
Isaac Weed connected with Noah Thornton for a 33-yard touchdown for the only Bulldog score of the game.
“Overall we played well,” Central Decatur head coach Jon Pedersen said. “Our defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage. They scored late on a long pass, otherwise we played extremely well on defense.
“Wyman Reed and Trenton Wells had good games on offense,” he continued. “At times we played well, but I need to be more consistent in offensive execution. Very pleased with our effort and look forward to getting better each week.”
Central Decatur hosts Interstate 35 on Friday.
Winterset 43, Interstate 35 20
TRURO — Interstate 35 accumulated 324 rushing yards on Friday, but fell to Class 3A Winterset by a score of 43-20.
Briar Vogel proved to be a threat with his arm and his legs, combining for 193 total yards in the loss. Vogel finished 5-of-15 passing for 63 yards and also ran for a team-high 130 yards on 16 carries, including two touchdowns.
Senior Alex Middleton added 125 yards on 20 rushing attempts and sophomore Jaylan White, averaging 9.9 yards per carry, picked up 69 rushing yards and one touchdown on seven carries.
White also led the team in receiving, with 25 yards on two catches. Junior Zach Goering finished with 21 yards on two receptions, while sophomore Daniel Kennedy picked up 17 yards on one catch.
Winterset was led by senior Alex Forgy’s 198 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Brandon Allen added a 76-yard touchdown reception.
Interstate 35 returns to action Friday at Central Decatur.
Murray 64,
Mormon Trail 28
MURRAY — Andrew Rider scored six rushing touchdowns and added another on a 52-yard interception return as Murray rolled to a 64-20 halftime lead on the way to Friday’s 64-28 win over Mormon Trail.
Sam Rockhold’s 57-yard TD pass reception from Matt Barnes started a Mustang scoring flurry after Mormon Trail had closed the gap to 22-20 early in the second period. Murray outscored the visitors 54-6 in the second quarter.
Rider carried 17 times for 244 yards (14.4 average per carry). Barnes completed 2-of-5 passes for 68 yards. Rockhold finished with eight total tackles and a fumble recovery to lead the defense. George Barber had two tackles for losses.
“We got off to another slow start in the first quarter as we are still trying to build some continuity on offense,” Murray coach Keith Shields said. “Our offense moved the ball all night. We just shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times early with our center-quarterback exchange. Our defense was solid again all night after giving up two kickoff returns for touchdowns early in the game.”
Murray, 1-1, hosts Ankeny Christian Academy this week.
