Lyle Kembery Thayer

Lyle Kembery, 89, of Afton, formerly of Thayer, died Aug. 19, 2013, at Afton Care Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at Lorimor Church of God. The Rev. Ben Turner will officiate. Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, Creston, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.powersfh.com.

Lyle Hilton Kembery, son of Sadie Glen (Standley) and James Prentiss Kembery, was born April 8, 1924, in Adair County.

The family moved to Arispe in 1940 and later to a farm near Thayer in 1942. Lyle was educated in area country schools. He began farming at an early age.

On Nov. 5, 1953, Lyle married Lela Josephine (Henrichs) Reed in Mount Ayr. They settled and farmed southeast of Thayer all of their married life. Lyle raised Charolais cattle.

Lela died in 2004.

Lyle moved to Afton Care Center in September 2012.

Lyle is survived by his stepdaughter Karon Jones of Thayer; granddaughter Kimberly Reed of Creston; great-grandchildren, Jarod Hayes and Skyler, Levi, Mariah and Mattea Reed; sisters, Mary Kienholz and Carmen Hicks, both of Spokane, Wash.; and brother William Cullen Kembery of Goshen, Ind.

In addition to his wife, Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Marilyn Tostenson; stepson Karol Reed; granddaughter Leslie Jones; sisters, Alda Cooper, Lorraine Scott, Gloria Meaders and Grace Sills; and brothers, James Prentiss Kembery Jr. and Dale Kembery.
