Clarke Community School District has a new activities director (AD), and it’s a familiar face within the district.
During a Clarke School Board special meeting Monday afternoon, the board approved the hiring of Ryan Sweeney, 36, as the new AD.
“He’s a member of our community and the district,” said Clarke Superintendent Benita Gonzales in an interview after the meeting. “So, we know this is somebody who supports Clarke and our activities programs. He’s been very involved as a coach of multiple sports and a volunteer. He helps with a variety of different activities.”
About Sweeney
Sweeney graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and an endorsement in health. He taught for one year at Wapsie Valley Junior High School before coming to Clarke.
Sweeney is starting his 14th year at Clarke. Before becoming the AD, he taught health and physical education.
In July, Sweeney completed his master’s degree in higher education administration from Upper Iowa University.
The starting date for Sweeney as the district’s new AD was Monday.
As for Sweeney’s annual salary, Gonzales said, “It’s a pro-rated $70,000. So, minus 34 days, because our contract would normally start July 1. It will be pro-rated upon his first day.”
Goals
During an Osceola Sentinel-Tribune telephone interview Monday afternoon, Sweeney said he’s looking forward to making a difference as an AD. He said he’s been in the community for a long time and the position feels like the “right fit.”
“My goal is to get things organized and do what I can to help everybody else,” he said. “I want to make it the best program possible.”
