Two men died Saturday morning in Osceola after being struck by an eastbound Burlington Northern freight train, this according to Osceola Police Chief Marty Duffus.

Zackariah Alan Brown, 24, of Osceola and Justin Michael Schumacher, 22, of Indianola both died of their injuries. Duffus said investigators do not know why the two men were on the railroad tracks near the intersection with Delaware Street around 5:11 a.m. Duffus said they were not at a crossing.

"We are waiting on different reports to come back, including a toxicology report," Duffus said. "We won't make a ruling on this right away, but the biggest question is why were they there? I wish we knew."

Duffus added, the location were the two men were hit by the train is residential. However, there were no witnesses other than the engineer of the train.
