I-35 shares conference title with MSM

The Interstate 35 Roadrunners shared the 2013 Pride of Iowa Conference softball championship with Martensdale-St. Marys.

The Roadrunners finished off the season with a 7-2 win over East Union on July 2 and a 4-1 win at Southeast Warren on July 3.

Interstate 35 and Martensdale St. Marys both finished with a conference record of 14-1.

Caitlin Weeks hit a home run and drove in two runs against East Union, while Brittany Mease hit a solo home run. Brooke Brommel, Jenna Sandquist and Jordan Williamson each drove in one run.

Weeks picked up the win, throwing seven innings and surrendering two runs on two hits with 10 strikeouts.

In the 4-1 win over Southeast Warren, Jenna Sandquist went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Brooke Brommel and Jordan Williamson each drove in one run.

The Roadrunners, ranked 10th in the final Class 3A rankings, finished the season with a record of 22-5.

Interstate 35 opens up regional play on July 9 at home against Red Oak. With a win in that game, the Roadrunners would advance to host either Clarinda or Shenandoah at 7 p.m. on Friday.

On the bottom half of the Class 3A Region 8 is Saydel, Atlantic, ADM and Bondurant-Farrar. The Region 8 final takes place 7 p.m. Monday at Saydel.

Central Decatur finished its season with a 5-4 win at Mount Ayr on July 2.

Sadie Greene hit a two-run home run and picked up the win in the pitching circle, going seven innings with seven hits, four runs and four strikeouts.

Lydia Martin and Hailee Kelso each drove in a run for the Cardinals. Caitlyn Saxton finished with three stolen bases.

The Cardinals open regional play on July 10 against either Mount Ayr or Nodaway Valley. If they win that game, they would advance to take on either Des Moines Christian, West Central Valley or Woodward-Granger at 7 p.m. on Friday in Urbandale.

The Class 2A Region is 7 p.m. Monday in Ogden.
