Clarke softball wraps up SCC championship

With a 3-1 win over Eddyville-Blakesburg on July 3, the Clarke Lady Indians wrapped up their second straight South Central Conference championship.

Clarke, ranked 11th in the final Class 3A ratings, fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but tallied one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pull out the 3-1 victory.

Eighth-grade shortstop Vanessa Bakley and junior center fielder Carley Robins each hit a solo blast and sophomore catcher Kassidy Spurgin drove in a run.

Carrie Kindred picked up the win in the pitching circle, throwing four innings and allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Libby Bemis pitched three innings of relief, earning the save, allowing three hits and striking out one.

The Lady Indians finished the regular season with a pair of losses at the Ottumwa Classic on Friday, losing to Southeast Polk 2-0 and to Cardinal, Eldon 12-11.

Up next for the Lady Indians is the regional tournament.

If they win their first round game against Chariton on July 9, the Lady Indians would advance to take on either Albia or Centerville at 7 p.m. Friday in Osceola.

The bottom half of the Class 3A Region 6 bracket includes Mediapolis, Central Lee, Davis County and No. 2-ranked West Burlington Notre Dame.

The regional final takes place 7 p.m. Monday in Ottumwa.
