Meet the county fair queen, king candidates

These are the candidates for Clarke County Fair’s queen and king. The fair is scheduled July 17-22.

Dakota Matlage

Dakota Matlage, 17, of Murray is the daughter of Mark and Michele Matlage. She is sponsored by Osceola Go-Getters.

Matlage attends Murray High School and will be a senior in the fall. Her high-school activities include volleyball, FFA, speech and drama.

Her other community activities include 4-H Osceola Go-Getters, volunteering in the community for various projects, working toward a Silver Cord, which is a special honor for community service, Leon and Clarke’s youth rodeos, Murray and New Virginia saddle clubs and 2013 Cowgirl Queen contest.

Matlage’s hobbies include reading, horseback riding, drawing, hanging out with family and friends, watching movies and working with animals.

Rachael Simpson

Rachael Simpson, 17, of Osceola is the daughter of Shane and Elizabeth Simpson. She is sponsored by Bill Trickey.

Simpson attends Clarke Community High School and will be a senior in the fall. Her high-school activities include student council, marching band, AmeriCorps, Silver Cord, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, tennis, Iowa Girls State, concert band, and one year on the yearbook/school paper.

Simpson’s other community activities include teaching elementary Sunday school, assisting with Vacation Bible School, working at Fareway, Neighbors Helping Neighbors and volunteering, which includes Osceola Chamber Main Street events.

Simpson’s hobbies are volunteering, babysitting, reading and church.

Bronwyn Miller

Bronwyn Miller, 16, of Osceola is the daughter of John and Martha Miller. She is sponsored by the 4-H group K.W. Hustlers.

Miller attends Clarke Community High School and will be a junior in the fall. Her high-school activities include volleyball, bowling track, drama and chorus.

Miller’s other community activities include 4-H, working at Lakeside Casino, Clarke County Saddle Club and Murray Saddle Club.

Miller’s hobbies include showing horses, socializing, swimming and playing sports.

Jennifer Brandt

Jennifer Brandt, 17, of Osceola is the daughter of Terry Brandt and Mary McWilliams. She is sponsored by the 4-H group K.W. Hustlers.

Brandt attended Clarke Community High School and will be a freshman at Des Moines Area Community College in the fall. Her high-school activities include football and basketball cheerleading, color guard, concert band, FFA, jazz band, track, pep band, National Honor Society and drill team.

Brandt’s other community activities include 4-H, Silver Cord, working at Animal Health and Surgery vet clinic and being a leader at cheer and drill camps at the elementary school.

Brandt’s hobbies include working with animals, spending time with family and friends, reading, talking, learning new things and doing arts and crafts.

Ashley Jackson

Ashley Jackson, 16, of Van Wert is the daughter of Bob and Glenda Jackson. She is sponsored by Osceola FFA.

Jackson attends Clarke Community High School and will be a senior in the fall. Her high-school activities include Silver Cord, FFA, ETS, color guard, drill team, student council, drama and crew.

Jackson’s hobbies include riding horses and being outdoors.

Weston Brokaw

Kind candidate Weston Brokaw, 16, of Osceola is the son of Matt and Denise Brokaw. He is sponsored by the 4-H group K.W. Hustlers.

Brokaw attends Clarke Community High School and will be a junior in the fall. His high-school activities include football, basketball, golf, 4-H president, FFA vice president, student council, band, marching band, jazz band and honor roll.

Brokaw’s other community activities include volunteering at youth rodeos and Haiti Service Learning Experience.

Brokaw’s hobbies include raising cattle and pigs, working on the farm, tractor pulling, hunting, fishing, golfing, playing with his little brothers and spending time with friends.
