No citations were issued after an accident 1:43 a.m. May 12 on Interstate 35 near mile-marker 36.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, Rose A. Hammes, 50, of Tonganoxie, Kan., driving a 2012 Chevrolet south on Interstate 35, struck a deer.

Damage estimate is $5,000.

No citations were issued after an accident 1:17 p.m. May 13 on Interstate 35 near mile-marker 39.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, Richard Texas Matros, 79, of Overland Park, Kan., driving a 2010 Ford south on Interstate 35, struck tire debris, lost control of the vehicle and entered the west ditch.

Matros drove the vehicle out of the ditch and continued to the interstate’s exit No. 34. Matros stopped at the Pilot gas station to seek medical assistance for him and his passenger Maureen B. Matros, 78. They were both wearing seat belts and transported to Clarke County Hospital with reports of minor injuries.

Damage estimate is $3,000.

Linda Kay Sanderson, 43, of Bethany, Mo., was cited for failure to obey a yield sign and yield the right of way after an accident 4:49 p.m. May 17 on Interstate 35 near exit No. 33.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, Sanderson, driving a 2000 Chrysler van, entered the exit’s on-ramp and struck the back axles of a 2011 Mack tractor-trailer driven by Howard Lester Johnson III, 41, of Macon, Ga.

There were no reported injuries. Damage estimates are $2,000 to Sanderson’s vehicle and no reported damage to Johnson’s vehicle.

Stephanie L. Lavery, 20, of Murray was cited for failure to stop within the assured, clear distance after an accident 3:14 p.m. May 20 in the east lane of Highway 34 approximately 1,196 feet west from Southwest Boulevard.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, Lavery, driving a 1999 Toyota east on Highway 34, was approaching a lane closure in a road-construction zone. Other traffic was already stopped by a construction worker holding a stop sign. Lavery was distracted by a cat that was in the vehicle with her. She failed to see the stopped traffic ahead of her and was unable to avoid a collision.

Lavery’s vehicle struck the back of 2013 Toyota pickup driven by Neal Gerard McLaughlin, 50, of West Des Moines, and this caused a chain reaction. McLaughlin’s vehicle struck the back of a 2009 Compass driven by Steven Edgar Peterson, 30, of Ames. Peterson’s vehicle struck the back of a 2006 truck/trailer driven by Gary Lee Barnhart, 53, of Garden Grove.

Lavery and McLaughlin were transported to Clarke County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Their vehicles were removed from the scene. Peterson and Barnhart were reported uninjured and were able to drive their vehicles away from the scene.

Damage estimates are $6,500 to Lavery’s vehicle, $14,500 to McLaughlin’s vehicle, $5,500 to Peterson’s vehicle and $1,000 to the truck/trailer owned by Kevin T. Cline of Humeston.
