Mabel Oehlert, 91, of Osceola died May 4, 2013, at Clarke County Hospital.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St. Tom Murr officiated. Memorials may be directed to Clarke County Hospital, Osceola Senior Citizens Center, Woodburn United Methodist Church or Circle of Life Hospice in Chariton. Mabel Darline McLaughlin Oehlert, daughter of Cora Eliza (Baker) and Marion Martin McLaughlin, was born Dec. 8, 1921, at the family home near the community of Groveland.
Mabel received her elementary education at the Groveland country school. She graduated from Osceola High School in 1939. She also received her degree in teaching after attending Simpson College and Drake University.
Mabel’s career in teaching lasted nine and one-half years in rural schools with the exception of Weldon and Murray.
On April 15, 1950, Mabel married William “Bill” Bryan Oehlert, a resident of Woodburn, at her mother’s home in Leslie.
Mabel was a farm wife for 24 years in the Woodburn community.
Mabel did volunteer work and was a former member of Woodburn United Methodist and Osceola United Methodist churches. While attending church at Woodburn, she helped organize the Women’s Methodist Society. After 11 years, her membership was transferred to Willow Creek Baptist Church. Mabel was also a past member of Woodburn O.E.S. and White Shrine of Jerusalem.
Mabel is survived by her husband Bill Oehlert; daughter Emily Miller of Tiffin; daughter-in-law Mary Oehlert of Woodburn; sons, Martin (Rebecca) Oehlert of Osceola and William (Terri) Oehlert of Galesburg, Ill.; daughters, Elizabeth (Charlie) Harger of Eldridge and E’Lynne (Lonnie) Stone of Woodburn; grandchildren, Jason (Michelle) Miller, Jeremy Oehlert, Erica Miller, Tiffany Oehlert (Travis Johnson), Brian Allen Oehlert II and Ryan Oehlert; great-grandchildren, Alexander William Miller, Madison Dawn and Bryce Lee Johnson, Ashlyn Dawn and Tucker Allen Oehlert and Olive Mae and Angus Paul Miller; brothers-in-law, Bob (Jean) Oehlert of Osceola and J.D. (Liz) Oehlert of Stockton, Calif.; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; father- and mother-in-law, Herschel and Emily Oehlert; brother-in-law Allen Oehlert; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerald McLaughlin in infancy, Orvie and Beverly McLaughlin, Allie and Bronna McLaughlin, Garl and Velda McLaughlin, Frederic and Juanita McLaughlin, Doyle and Bev McLaughlin; and son Brian Oehlert.
