Kylar McCann, 18, is like a lot of high school students. She’s active in tennis, track and basketball. But, McCann had an exceptionally busy weekend April 5.

The weekend started April 5 with a track meet in Ballard. McCann ran the 4 by 400 meters, the final race of the night. The following day, McCann had a basketball game in Cedar Rapids to play in.

“I ran the last race, and then my mom booked a hotel in Cedar Rapids so we go there that night,” said McCann.

McCann and her parents, Marvin and Kayleen McCann, stayed at a hotel overnight, and McCann was up at 6 a.m. the following morning for practice at 8 a.m. for the All Star basketball game.

“I guess I’m used to travel and stuff,” McCann said. “I guess it was just another trip, ‘cause, I mean, I traveled for basketball this summer. … It was tiring, but I made it through it.”

All Star

The Iowa Girls’ Athletic Coaches Association All Star games were held at Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids April 6 and 7. They selected girls all around Iowa for the All Star teams.

“I played with some girls that are actually going to play at the same college as me,” McCann said.

The game started at noon, and McCann’s team won. After the game, McCann and her parents drove back to Osceola from Cedar Rapids, a 176-mile trip. That night, McCann had her senior prom.

“I did most of my hair in the car on the way down,” McCann said, “and I tried doing my makeup, but that didn’t work.”

Clarke prom

She made it home, where she finished getting ready and made it to Clarke Community High School’s prom April 6 in time to walk-in second to last with her date.

McCann plans to attend Grandview College in Des Moines after graduating. She signed with the college April 24 to play basketball and tennis. She plans to major in biology, and eventually go into chiropractics. McCann plans to open her own independent chiropractic center.

“It was an honor to go to the All Star game, ‘cause it was exciting and I got to see people that I will be playing with next year,” said McCann. “Prom was fun, too. …The All Star game was probably the best part.”
