Geary Phillips Osceola
Geary Phillips, 87, of Osceola died April 21, 2013, at Clarke County Hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. today, April 25, at Maple Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Phillips will officiate. Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to his family for a bench to be placed on the courthouse lawn.
Geary Ivan Phillips, son of Lydia Alma (McReynolds) and Ivan Phillips, was born June 25, 1925, in Carson (Potawatamie County).
Geary moved with his parents to a farm in Clarke County when he was 10 years old. Geary attended country school in Clarke County, finishing the eighth grade.
Geary worked on the family farm, until he was drafted in 1943. Geary was selected to serve in the Navy and sent for basic training at the naval station in Farragut, Idaho. After basic training, Geary was assigned to the battleship USS California.
In 1947, Geary married Leanna Ruth Carson from the Woodburn area.
In addition to farming, Geary also worked at what is now the Farm and Home Store in Osceola for nearly 22 years. Geary and Ann retired from farming in 2005 and have been living in Osceola.
Geary was a member of Osceola Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 3495 and past member of American Legion.
Geary is survived by his wife Leanna Ruth Phillips of Osceola; sons, Chris (Deloris) Phillips and Marty (Trish) Phillips, all of Osceola; daughters, Phyllis (Frank W.) Jones of Osceola and Janet (Frank D.) Jones of Grand River; grandchildren, Jerad (Rachael) Phillips of Lisbon, Geary B (Rechelle) Phillips of Osceola, Clinton (Laurie) Phillips of Osceola, David Jones of Cummings, Amy (Garry) Cunningham of Indianola and Erin (Ryan) VanRoekel of Bella Vista, Ark.; great-grandchildren, Austin, Colton, Logan, Josi, Avery, Bria, LeAnna and Makayla; sisters, Elva Downing of Osceola and Vada (Harold) Wickliff of Newton; other relatives and many friends.
Geary was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lloyd and Charles Phillips; sister Roberta Schultz; and grandsons, Eric Jason and Brandon Phillips.
