Mary Louise Fitzpatrick, 82, of Osceola died April 18, 2013, at Mercy West Hospital in West Des Moines.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. Interment was in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Chariton. Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to St. Bernard Catholic Church or American Parkinsons Disease Association.
Mary Louise Fitzpatrick, daughter of Helen (Lalley) and James Shovlain Sr., was born June 4, 1930, in Lovilia.
Mary Lou grew up in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School in 1949. After attending Ottumwa Heights College, Mary Lou taught at a country school in Monroe County.
On April 17, 1952, Mary Lou married Harold Fitzpatrick at St. Patrick’s in Melrose.
Mary Lou and Harold lived for two years in North Carolina, while Harold served at Camp Lejeune. After his discharge, Mary Lou and her husband began their farming operation in Iowa and eventually moved to Clarke County in 1958.
Mary Lou was an active member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 4-H leader, school volunteer and American Cancer Society volunteer.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband Harold; children, Larry of Iowa City, Joan (Van) Ferguson of Windsor Heights, Paul (Liesl) of Urbandale, Jeanne (Joe) Robuccio of Columbia, Pa., Julie (Bob) Larson of Jefferson and Janet (Tony) Topping of West Des Moines; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen (Tom) Kreber of Sibley and Virgene (Pat) McManus of Windsor Heights; sisters-in-law, Lois (John) Knowles of Albia, LaVera Cottrell of Woodburn, Marcella Shovlain of Davenport and Marge Shovlain of Madison, Wis.; many nieces and nephews.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Ed, Jim and Pat Shovlain; and granddaughter Olivia Robuccio.
