Clarke junior Colin Morris hits a forehand return shot during his No. 1 singles loss to Saydel's Alex Gustafson on Thursday. Gustafson defeated Morris 5-3, 10-8, but Clarke won the team score 7-2.

The Clarke tennis teams got their seasons started on the right foot on Thursday, with the boys defeating Saydel 7-2 here, while the girls picked up an 8-1 win at Saydel.

For head coach Jeff Ehrhardt, who said the girls team’s goal is to make a repeat trip to state, it was smooth sailing in the opener.

Senior Kylar McCann rolled to a 4-1, 8-2 win at No. 1 singles over Saydel senior Clare Smith as junior Libby Bemis picked up a 4-0, 8-3 win over Katey Cambrel at No. 2 singles.

Junior Tracy Morgan kept things rolling for the Lady Indians, winning 4-0, 8-1 over Mackenzie Miller at No. 3 singles. Junior Cassidy Bierbrodt shut out Mackenzie Carter by a score of 4-0, 8-0 at No. 4 singles.

Senior Kacey Klemesrud also won in a shutout, 4-0, 8-0, over Shelby Brown at No. 5 singles. No. 6 singles was the only victory of the day for Saydel, as Sydney Samples defeated Clarke junior Macey Snell, 4-2, 8-4.

The No. 1 doubles team of McCann and Bemis rolled to a 4-0, 8-1 victory over Miller and Carter. Morgan and Klemesrud picked up an easy 4-1, 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles over Smith and Cambrel.

Bierbrodt and Snell also won 4-1, 2-8 over the No. 3 doubles team of April Jeske and Alexis Jeske, giving the Lady Indians an 8-1 win over Saydel.

The Clarke boys also opened their season with a win over Saydel, winning 7-2 at home on Thursday.

The only two losses for the Indians — at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles — both came in close matches.

Junior Colin Morris fell to Saydel senior Alex Gustafson 3-5, 8-10 at No. 1 singles. Junior Jared Jamison picked up a 5-3, 10-3 win over Alex Garton at No. 2 singles.

Yahia Aly won 5-4, 10-4 over Hunter White at No. 3 singles and Johannes Zehnter won at No. 4 singles, 5-0, 10-1 over Joe Smith.

Sophomore Ali Aly and junior Holden Hewitt both shut out their opponents at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Ali Aly defeated Jacob Philipsen and Hewitt beat Max Kayser.
