Betty Redman Van Wert

Betty Redman, 94, of Van Wert died Jan. 31, 2013, at her farm home south of Van Wert.

Services were 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Osceola. The Rev. Rick Hawkins officiated. Interment was in Decatur City Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Van Wert United Methodist Church or Van Wert United Community Club. Online condolences may be left at www.kalefuneralhome.com.

Kathryn Elizabeth “Betty” Redman, daughter of Mary Elizabeth (Lee) and James Levi Cochran, was born Nov. 23, 1918, in Clarke County.

Betty grew up on a farm and attended country school near Woodburn. She went on to Drake University and received her Bachelor of Science and teaching certificate.

Betty taught school in Clarke Community Schools in Weldon, retiring in 1984.

Betty started her teaching career at Hollingshead Country School when she was 18 years old, after attending Osceola Junior College and Teachers College at Cedar Falls.

On April 9, 1939, Betty married Roland James “Jimmie” Redman at Van Wert Christian Church parsonage.

Betty stayed home, raising their children, until returning to teaching at Weldon.

Betty was a member of Van Wert United Methodist Church, and served as a Sunday school and vacation Bible school teacher, Van Wert Community Club, United Methodist Women, a leader of Decatur County Achievers 4-H Club and was a member of the Clarke County and Decatur County Retired Teachers organization.

Betty managed the café at Leon Sale Barn for several years, along with her mother- and sisters-in-law.

She was the treasurer of the United Methodist Women when they served lunch at Humeston Sale Barn.

Betty is survived by her children, Roland Jon Redman of Weldon, Kari Jean (Victor) Gutierrez of Milliken, Colo., Frederick James Redman of Earlham and Rebecca Joyce (Alan) Taylor of Mount Ayr; sister Doris Douthitt of Duncan, Okla.; sister-in-law Midge Cochran of Brandenton, Fla.; grandchildren, Rocinda Green, Rolanda Redman, Rochelle (Jeremy) Cochran, Vicci (Ray) Carson, John (Debbie) Sullivan, Kimberly (Dean) Fenn, Kendall (Doreen) Redman, Lezlie Carey, Chad (Stacy) Redman, Ryan Redman, Erikka (Tim) Bouska, Jordan (Tiffany) Redman, Andrew (Lindsey) Redman, Danielle Redman, Malori Redman and Amber (Ed) Schafer; great-grandchildren, Paula (Dustin) Green, Kelli (Nicholas) Chase, Jacob Snook, Joshua (Dina) Snook, Joseph Snook, Jordan, Erin and Logan Cochran, Susan (Daniel) Sanchez, Travis Carson, Jamie and Jared Sullivan, Ty (Taylor) Redman, Kyle (Tylea) Redman, Cody (Lakoda) Redman, Dezi Carey, Zach, Jack and Reagan Redman, Brett and Kylee Taylor, Maisie Yeager, Masan and Nolan Redman, Johnathan and Olivia Bouska, Roman Redman and Evalyn Schafer; nine great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband; siblings, Leota Johnson, Clayton Cochran, Hope Paschall and Donald Cochran; grandchild Bob Taylor and nephews, Joe Cochran and Jim Paschall.
