Good start for Clarke girls JV

Despite having just six players, the Clarke girls junior varsity basketball team has gotten off to a successful start to the season.

“Clarke girls’ junior varsity basketball team has been working hard from the beginning of the season in order to play its own schedule of games, as well as dressing for all of the varsity games,” junior varsity coach Kayleen McCann said.

The Lady Indians started the season with a Dec. 6 victory over Murray’s junior varsity, winning 28-17.

Amanda Kindred led the team in scoring with seven points, while Maddi Heath chipped in six points. Baylie Balcaen scored four points and grabbed 13 rebounds with six blocks for the game. Ally Deutsch added three points, while Kassidy Spurgin and Brooke Hem each netted two points.

Clarke returned from the holiday break on Jan. 4 with a 25-17 win over Davis County.

Heath led the way with nine points and five steals, shooting 63 percent from the free throw line in the win. Balcaen also scored nine points. Kindred chipped in three points, while Deutsch and Hem each scored two points. Hem finished with four defensive rebounds.

The very next morning, Clarke picked up a 38-27 win at Winterset.

Spurgin led the scoring effort with 11 points, while Heath netted 10 points. Balcaen tallied seven points as Kindred pitched in six. Hem and Deutsch each scored two points.

Kindred collected three steals and Heath and Deutsch each finished with two. Hem collected five defensive rebounds.

“Again, challenging defense and scoring by each player on the team led to another win,” McCann said.

Clarke picked up a win over Albia on Dec. 14, as the two teams played just two quarters because of illness and low numbers.

The Lady Indians won 23-9.

Balcaen led the way with eight points and one block. Kindred, Heath and Deutsch each scored four points for the Lady Indians. Hem chipped in two points with three rebounds and Spurgin scored one point.
