Third quarter deflates I-35 girls against NV

TRURO — For two quarters, the Interstate 35 girls basketball team looked poised to knock off Nodaway Valley here on Friday, even though Nodaway Valley post player Syndey Reeves scored 12 points in the first half.

But, Interstate 35 managed just one point in the third quarter, as Nodaway Valley went on an 11-1 run to take a 31-18 lead into the fourth quarter.

“In the second half, we came out and did a good job on (Reeves),” head coach Jamie Smith said. “They had some other girls make shots and we didn’t. Just not a very good shooting night for us, and they hit some free throws in the second half.”

Nicole Travis led the way, scoring 11 points for the Roadrunners. Charlie Rupp added eight points. Jordan Williamson scored six points and Brooke Brommel chipped in three points.

Reeves finished with a game-high 15 points for Nodaway Valley.

Interstate 35 stayed in the game early, despite giving up several easy baskets to Reeves.

“I thought, number one we hit some shots,” Smith said. “I thought we did a good job rebounding. Our goal tonight was to find Reeves, and we let her get a few baskets there early, but the big difference was when we came back we hit some shots. We were more patient on offense, took care of the ball a little bit better, and helped us get back in the game there a little bit.”

Smith praised Rupp and Brommel for their effort in the game, noting that what they bring to the team doesn’t always show up in the box score. Rupp and Brommel shared the load defending Reeves, who Smith said will be a first-team all-conference selection this year.
