I-35 seventh, CD 15th at Gary Christensen Invite

WINTERSET — Interstate 35 had two runner-up finishers Saturday at the Gary Christensen Invitational here, leading the Roadrunners to a seventh-place finish, while Central Decatur finished 15th in the 17-team field.

Ethan Jones and Tyler Lester both placed runner-up at 182 pounds and 195 pounds, respectively.

Jones was pinned by Jordan Grove of ADM, Adel in the finals after picking up pins over Winterset's Russell Phillips and Waukee's Casey Bennett, and a 9-6 decision over Oskaloosa's Mason Wisse on his way to the championship match.

Dane Jones of Oskaloosa pinned Lester in the championship match, after Lester won by technical fall 18-3 over Winterset's Nick Tank, won by decision 12-5 over Clarinda's Cain Johanns and won by a 3-1 decision over Corning's Zach Barton in the semifinals.

Freshman Sal Arzani finished third at 145 pounds for the Roadrunners, while Lonnie Harper (220) and Bobby Heilman (285) each finished fourth.

Wyatt Davenport was pinned by Oskaloosa's Andrew Landgrebe in the quarterfinals and the lost to Shenandoah's Matt Gray by fall in the consolation bracket. Davenport bounced back to pin Glenwood's Isiah Carter and Central Decatur's Garrett Clark to finish seventh.

Sophomore Brennon Short was the top placewinner for Central Decatur, finishing fourth at 138 pounds.

Short pinned Corning's Buck Schafroth in :43 in the opening round before getting pinned by Waukee's Troy Gatzionis in 1:39 in the second round.

Short won a 14-8 decision over Clarinda's Trey Stickler in the consolation bracket, and then won a 14-11 decision over Urbandale's Mike Stuart. Short lost an 11-4 decision to ADM's Zach Johnston in the third-place match.

Junior Wyman Reed finished seventh at 145 pounds. Reed won a major decision over Shenandoah's Tyler Dalley, 12-2, in the opening round before losing in a technical fall to Southeast Warren's Jacob Hoch.

Reed was pinned by Glenwood's Brogan Weddum in the consolation bracket before pinning Corning's Garrett Newton. Reed then won an 11-2 decision over Dalley in the seventh-place match.

Sophomore Colton Ranney placed eighth at 132 pounds for the Cardinals.

Ranney picked up a 7-6 decision over Van Meter's Chase Wyant in the opening round before getting pinned by Urbandale's Colby Knight.
