Interstate 35 defeated Clarke wrestling 66-18 in Truro on Jan. 2.

Lonnie Harper got things started for the Roadrunners at 220 pounds, with a 33-second pin of Ty Ryan. After Bobby Heilman secured a win by forfeit at 285 for Interstate 35, Austin Pontier picked up a win by fall over Landon Spurgin in 3:59, giving the Roadrunners an 18-0 advantage early.

Clarke’s Austin Penick picked up a win by forfeit at 113, but the Indians forfeited to Kevin Rachau at 120 pounds.

Interstate 35’s Paul Queck picked up a pin over Chasen Selsor in 1:08 at 126 pounds. Interstate 35 forfeited to Brett Moffett at 132 pounds, and then Chace Garner pinned Blake Kozak in 2:48 at 138 pounds, giving the Indians their final win of the dual.

Angelo Madonia and Tommy Bregar picked up pins for the Roadrunners, while Sal Arzani, Zach Beem, Ethan Jones and Tyler Lester all won by forfeit.

“I was a little disappointed in the way that we began the night,” Clarke head coach Brian Reece said. “We didn’t wrestle the way we are capable of. I think we may have been a little intimidated by I-35 because a lot of our kids know the kids from there.

“I challenged the kids to wrestle better the next two duals. I thought we responded well and came out much more aggressive against Bedford/Lenox and Winterset. We continue to gain valuable experience. The biggest thing that freshmen wrestlers need to learn is the difference between middle school and high school wrestling. There are a lot of things that will work in middle school that don’t work in high school. We are learning as we go.”

Winterset defeated Clarke by a 66-12 margin on Jan. 3.

Austin Penick picked up a win by fall at 113 pounds. Penick pinned Kolt Kiburz in 1:19. The only other win for the Indians came at 170 pounds, where Winterset forfeited to Jacob Bair.

Brett Moffett lost a close match at 132 pounds to Mitchell Holcomb, 3-2.

Clarke fell to Bedford/Lenox 59-24 on Jan. 3.

Brett Moffett picked up a pin at 132 pounds over Zach Johnson in 4:00. Gable Reece won by fall at 145 pounds over Zach Marxen in 3:15. At 170 pounds, Jacob Bair pinned Seth Willets in :45 for the third pin of the day dual for Clarke.

Austin Penick was the other winner for the Indians, as Bedford/Lenox forfeited to him at 113 pounds.

The Indians return to action tonight at Albia.
