Shirley Schamerhorn Truro

Shirley Schamerhorn, 84, of Truro died Nov. 26, 2012, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Truro United Methodist Church. The Rev. Sandy Smith and the Rev. Doug Helton officiated. Interment was in Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines with a committal service at 1:30 p.m. Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Osceola, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Parkinson’s Foundation, Iowa Chapter of APDA, Box 507, Waukee, IA 50263.

Shirley Irene Loose, daughter of Irene (Vernon) and Harold Loose, was born June 28, 1928. Shirley’s father was a salesman, and they moved at least 12 times in her young life.

Shirley met Richard Schamerhorn during elementary school at Waukee, and they were married Dec. 28, 1944.

She was a guide at Living History Farms for 1 1/2 years.

Shirley was a member of Truro United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, helped with rummage sales and luncheons and sang in the choir. She was unable to attend church regularly after her diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in 2005.

Shirley is survived by her husband Richard Schamerhorn of Truro; daughter Sandra (Eldon) Schultz of Truro; son Mark (Ronna) Schamerhorn of Dublin, Ga.; grandchildren, Bruce (Jeana) Schultz, Richard (Stacy) Schultz and Dixie (Mike) Davidson; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Wyatt, Allison, Travis, Crystal and Caleb; nephews, Brad (Rochelle) and Kent; nieces, Susan and Shelly (Scott); other relatives and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; infant son; and sister Charlotte Halstead.
