John Smith Osceola

John Smith, 87, of Osceola died Nov. 25, 2012, at Clarke County Hospital.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St. The Rev. William E. Ballard officiated. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery. John Galen Smith, son of Ida (Driver) and Milo Smith, was born Sept. 1, 1925, in Clarke County.

John attended schools in Clarke County and served in the Army in 1945 and 1946 with the armed forces in the Pacific.

In 1950, John married Lola June Mateer, and the couple lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., briefly.

Lola died in 1964.

John worked in construction for Clayton Mateer for several years and later became a dozer operator for Clarke County from 1958 to 1988. When he retired from the county, he became employed by SIRWA for 10 years.

John was a member of Osceola Christian Church, Herndon-Oehlert VFW Post No. 157 in Woodburn and Osceola AmVets.

John is survived by his children, Eric (Deloris) Smith of Osceola, Karen (Ron) Day of Chariton and Rowena (Tommy) Cottrell and Rebecca (Bill) Voris, all of Osceola; grandchildren, Derick (Nikki) Smith of Osceola, Troy (Joann) Smith of Ames, Krisinda (LeeJay) Wright of Woodburn, Katina Day of Ames, Samantha Day of Ames, Jolene (Craig) Fields of Bettendorf, Michael Voris (Samantha Morganroth) of San Antonio, Texas, Clint Cottrell of Osceola and Stephanie (Kevin) Moyer of West Des Moines; stepsons, Jim, Randy, Jeff and Rick Farlow; brothers, Paul Smith of Kellerton, William Smith of Woodburn, Donald Smith of Leon and Kenneth Smith of Osceola; sisters, Virginia Pfander of Colorado, Dorothy (Keith) Bowlsby of Osceola, Marjorie Reynolds of Osceola, Twyla (Francis) Mathis of New Providence and Lucy (Danny) Stubbs of Corydon; brothers-in-law, Sonny (Sue) Mateer, Larry (Tonya) Mateer and Wayne Patro; sister-in-law Shirley (Swede) Hamilton; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Spencer, Adalyn, Warren, Caleb, Connor, Claire and Kash; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his parents; brother Russell Smith; sister Mary White; brother Victor Smith; brothers-in-law, Clyde Bowlsby, Lyle Pfander, Milton Reynolds and Albert White; sisters-in-law, Ardelle (Paul) Smith, Dorothy (William) Smith and Charlotte Smith; father-in-law Clayton Mateer; mother-in-law Almarine (Hayes) Mateer; sisters-in-law, Maxine (Mateer) McCabe, Betty (Mateer) Townsend and Linda (Mateer) Patro and brother-in-law Roy Mateer.
