Dorothy Sheets, 97, of Humeston died Nov. 23, 2012, at her home south of Humeston.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at Humeston Christian United Methodist Church. The Rev. Diane Olson Schroeder officiated. Burial was in Cambria Cemetery. Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni was in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established by the family to benefit various Humeston community projects.
Dorothy Maxine Sheets, daughter of Ila (Ivy) and Harrison Clark Baker, was born April 1, 1915, near Leroy.
Dorothy was in one of the first classes to graduate from Leroy High School’s new building.
After graduation, Dorothy worked as a housekeeper.
On Feb. 16, 1938, Dorothy married Olen Sheets in Humeston.
Dorothy was a homemaker for her family, while Olen farmed south of Humeson. He slowly retired and rented out their land. Olen died Nov. 22, 1992.
Dorothy continued to live on the farm until her death.
As a child, she attended Leroy United Methodist Church and Smyrna Friends Church. Later she was active in the Humeston Methodist Church and their women’s organization. She played the piano at church and for Rebekah Lodge, of which she was a member.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Norman (wife Marianna) Sheets of Prole and Jerold (wife Virginia) Sheets of Humeston; grandchildren, Betsy and Peter Shank of Bloomington, Minn., Ben and Debi Sheets of Ripon, Wis., Ronda and Lonnie Ruckman of Liberty, Mo., and Tim and Lori Sheets of Norwalk; great-grandchildren, Gilbert Shank, Alexander and Tessa Sheets, Sara and Annie Ruckman and Jody, Sean and Kayle Sheets; step-great-grandson Ryan Eckert; great-great-grandchildren, Fernando, Alexis, Payton and Jocelynee; sister-in-law Esther Baker of Osceola; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; brother Donald Baker; and granddaughter Tamara Sue Sheets.
