MURRAY — Despite being shutout after one quarter of play, the Murray girls basketball team came back to defeat Mount Ayr 37-35 here Monday night.

“Luckily we didn’t fall all that far behind, and never gave up,” Murray head coach Jerry Shields said.

The Mustangs used a 20-10 fourth quarter to complete the comeback, taking the lead for the first time in the game with about 1:00 remaining.

“We were finally able to get going in the fourth quarter by scoring 20 points,” Shields said. “The only lead that we had was around the one-minute mark of the game.”

Kate Patton led the Mustangs with 12 points and five steals, also adding four rebounds and two assists. Megan Oswald chipped in 11 points and four rebounds.

Cheyanne Ashby collected a team-high seven rebounds as Ashley Rider added six more, while also collecting three steals.

Ashby, Madison Gonseth and Courtney Siefkas each scored four points, and Rider added two points.

Taylor Still led Mount Ayr with 14 points and Paige Daughton added 12 more.

MURRAY — Murray let a big fourth-quarter lead slip away before pulling off a 55-50 victory in overtime here on Nov. 20 over Southeast Warren.

The Mustangs move to 1-0 for the season, while Southeast Warren drops to 0-1.

“This was your typical first game of the year that you are so glad to get out of the way,” Murray head coach Jerry Shields said.

Southeast Warren outscored Murray 12-1 in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but Murray won the overtime period 13-8.

Kate Patton led all scorers with 26 points, and also collected eight steals to go along with four rebounds and two assists.

Ashley Rider contributed six points and 11 rebounds, while Megan Oswald, Madison Gonseth and Courtney Siefkas each recorded five points.

Oswald posted a teamhigh 12 rebounds, and also added six steals. Cheyanne Ashby and Deena Snyder each finished with four points.
