Frank Barnard, 93, of Osceola died Oct. 28, 2012, at Clarke County Hospital.
Funeral services were 10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 1, at New Virginia United Methodist Church. Interment was in New Virginia Cemetery. Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., was in charge of arrangements. Frank LeMerton Barnard, son of Floy Clara (Cellman) and Merton Long Barnard, was born Nov. 14, 1918, in Jamison.
Frank attended country school at Jamison and Pleasant Valley before graduating from New Virginia High School in 1936.
After graduation, Frank farmed with his father until he went into the service in 1942 for four years. He served in Belgium and France during World War II with the United States Army 422nd Medical Collection Company, attaining the rank of sergeant.
In 1947, Frank married Gweneth Hylton, and they lived in New Virginia.
Frank worked his lifetime as a farmer. After his military service, he continued to help farm the home place until 1950, when he and Gweneth ventured out on their own.
After the death of his father, Frank and his brother Eldon formed a partnership and farmed together for 30 years, until Frank retired in 1984 and moved to Osceola. He also substituted as a rural mail carrier and later assisted an electrician.
Frank was an active member of his church for more than 60 years, served on boards and sang in the choir. Other organizations to which he contributed were the New Virginia Lion’s Club, American Legion Post No. 218, New Virginia and Interstate 35 school boards and other township and county boards.
Frank is survived by his children, Kay (Jerry) Marso of Waukee, Sandra (Steve) Lathrum of Saint Charles and Stanley (Connie) Barnard of Urbandale; grandchildren, Gregory (Amy) Marso of Onalaska, Wis., Lori (David) Cuomo of Towson, Md., Kari (Jeffrey) Dawson of Norwalk, Richard Lathrum of St. Charles, Chad (Angie) Barnard of Clive, Jenna (Abraham) Theoflo of Urbandale and Nicholas Barnard of Iowa City; great-grandchildren, Gwen, Natalie and Zachary Marso, Joey, Katy and Maggy Cuomo, Brett Dawson and Luke and Camille Barnard; brother Eldon (Marian) Barnard of New Virginia; sisters, Jean Henrichs of New Virginia, Marion Akes of Osceola and Margaret (Warren) Moore of Omaha, Neb.; sister-in-law Edith Moore of Fort Collins, Colo.; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brothers-in-law, Ivan Henrichs, Wayne Akes and Robert Moore Sr.
