Thomas Britt Thayer
Thomas Britt, 74, of Thayer died Oct. 18, 2012, at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston.
Services were 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton. The Rev. Dwayne Henrichs officiated. Burial was in Murray Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Greater Regional Hospice. Online condolences may be left at www.powersfh.com.
Thomas Britt, son of Lucinda Fayette (Haines) and Oscar Pearl Britt, was born March 3, 1938, in Iowa City.
Thomas attended Colfax Community School and later attended classes at Southwestern Community College, graduating in March 1985.
On June 30, 1956, Thomas married Shirley Vyrlee Hanke in Newton.
They lived in Newton until 1957, when they moved to the West Chicago, Ill., area, where he drove race cars and also worked for a battery plant.
In 1969, they moved to Colfax, then moved to Thayer in 1971.
Thomas owned a salvage yard with his brother-in-law Don Rivers, ran a gas station in Murray and farmed.
Most recently, Thomas was maintenance manager at Wellman’s Dynamics, retiring June 1, 2000.
Thomas was a city council member in Thayer.
Thomas is survived by his son Michael Leroy Britt of Thayer; daughters, Mary Lucinda (husband Dale) Kistler of Thayer, Ronda Lou Britt of Thayer and Tammy Lee (husband Rodney) Lawrence of England; grandchildren, Christina Cook (fiancé Randy Brammer) of Osceola, Shane (wife Jessica) Mongar of Murray, Curtis (wife Kristine) Mongar of Murray, Stacia Mongar (fiancé Justin Brown) of Clearfield, Savannah Kistler of Thayer,
Bernice Britt of Thayer, Todd Cook of Van Wert and Tiffany Lawrence of England; great-grandchildren, Remington, Madison and Rylon Cook, Keaton Brammer, Kane and Kenzi Mongar, Gauge and Grady Mongar and Allisyn Brown; brother Glen Britt of Des Moines; sister Helen Britt of Davis City; sister-in-law Beverly Dodd of Florida; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son Thomas Oscar Britt Jr.; brother George Britt; sisters Beulah Sholley, Shirley Meyers and Betty Jean in infancy; sisters-in-law, Lila White, Marilyn Rivers and Catherine Britt; and brothers-in-law, Wilbur Sholley, Arlie “Junior” Meyers, Darrell Hanke, Donald Rivers, Phillip Dodd and Bernie White.
