Kenneth Ronald “Ron” Utley, 77, passed away Saturday, September 29 at his home in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, October 4, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 3300 Easton Blvd, Des Moines. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Ron was born February 9, 1935 in Osceola, IA. He spent much of his youth playing with his sisters and doing chores with his dad on a farm just outside of Osceola. Later, he joined the Air Force.
In 1958, he married Rita Mary Monahan from Creston, IA. They had three children and were happy and busy with their young family when Rita tragically passed away at the young age of 29.
Ron later met and married Margaret Jane “Margo” Hodson. Over the next 40 years, Ron and Margo enjoyed a variety of activities together, from making their annual visits to the Iowa State Fair, to enjoying time with family and friends or spending quiet evenings at home. They truly became inseparable. Then, as Alzheimer’s slowly took Ron from us, Margo let the family effort to keep him comfortably at home.
Ron spent most of his career with Fair Play Scoreboards before retiring in 1997. He will be remembered as a generous man, giving his time and talents to help family, friends and his church whenever they needed him.
Ron is survived by his wife, Margo; sisters, Tish (Bill) Mongar of Osceola, and Loretta (Cliff) Reeves of Osceola; children, Kathy Utley of Des Moines, Bob Utley of West Des Moines and Ron (Cindy) Utley of Ankeny; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Utley and his parents, Robert and Helen Utley.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel 3211 Hubbell Ave., Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to Iowa Health Home Care Hospice or St. Joseph Catholic Church.
