Mervin Poths – Woodburn

Mervin Poths, 87, of Woodburn died Sept. 14, 2012, at Kavanagh on 56th in Des Moines.

Services were 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Osceola. The Rev. Tom Murr officiated. Interment was in Woodburn Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Woodburn United Methodist Church or Herndon-Oehlert Post No. 157 American Legion.

Mervin Charles Poths, son of Esther Elizabeth (Balduff) and Wilbert Frederick Poths, was born July 4, 1925, in Sandusky, Ohio.

Mervin graduated from Sandusky High School and later served during World War II in the Army Air Corp.

On Apirl 7, 1946, Mervin married Marilea Joan Jamison in Granger.

Mervin was a lifetime farmer and operated Poths Grain near Woodburn for more than 32 years.

Mervin was a member of Woodburn United Methodist Church, Herndon-Oehlert Post No. 157 American Legion, serving in many capacities, and Lucas County Cattleman’s Association. Mervin recently traveled to Washington, D.C., with the WWII honor flight.

Mervin is survived by his daughter Sheryl Poths of Waukee and friend Christian of London, England; son Ron Poths of Woodburn and friend Carol of Winterset; brother Milton (wife Norma) Poths of Sandusky, Ohio; sister Shirley Poths of Sandusky, Ohio; cousins, Bruce (wife Deanna) Balduff of Columbus, Ohio, and MonteSue LaValley of Johnston; lifetime friend Robert “Bob” Hermes of Sandusky, Ohio, as well as other relatives and many friends.

Mervin was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters, Ruth Marie Hemmer, Barbara Jean Lilje and Erma Mae Poths; brother John Frederick Poths; father-in-law Chester Jamison and mother-in-law Fern Jamison.
