CD runs well in opener

CORYDON — The Central Decatur cross country teams ran well in their season openers at Wayne on Aug. 30.

“The Central Decatur cross country squads ran extremely tough and with a lot of determination at the first meet of the season,” head coach Reece Tedford said. “Both squads are significantly ahead of where they were at this same point a year ago.”

Central Decatur is co-oping with Lamoni this season, adding numbers to the squad.

The boys team finished ahead of last year’s Pride of Iowa Conference runner-up Wayne, finishing fifth overall.

“That was a significant achievement for our program to contend and beat a top conference opponent,” Tedford said. “Senior Neshamah Breshears led the way in his first ever cross country race with a time of 18:04, which is sixth on the all-time performance list.”

Breshears finished fourth overall, earning a medal. Junior Matt Marvin passed 19 runners in the final two miles, earning a medal with a new personal best time of 19:08 (10th on the all-time performance list), finishing 15th.

Senior Alex Foltz finished 35th (20:56) and Sergio Cardenas was 36th (20:57).

Desi Gentry led the girls team with a 35th-place finish in 19:52. Sophomore Taylor Farnsworth ran 19:54 for 36th place. Trista Waddell improved on her time on this course from last year while finishing third on the team.

I-35 opens at DC-G

DALLAS CENTER — The Interstate 35 girls cross country team finished 13th at the Dallas Center-Grimes Invite on Aug. 28, while the boys team finished 18th.

Leading the Roadrunner girls was junior Holly McKinney, who finished 21st overall with a time of 17:14.

Freshman Jordan McCoy-Yawn placed 58th overall with a time of 18:35. Sophomore Maddie Albers placed third on the squad and 65th overall with a time of 18:48.

Senior Megan Ellis placed 118th in 20:14 and junior Charlie Buddenhagen rounded out the scoring for the Roadrunners with her time 20:30 in 132nd.

Leading the boys squad were senior Ryan Hart and freshman Bryan Jackson, who placed 127th and 128th respectively in 21:34 and 21:35.

Freshman Garret McFarland placed 144th overall in 21:53, while freshman Sam Cook finished 190th overall in 23:09. Sophomore Jake McCuddin rounded out the scoring for Interstate 35 in 225th place, clocking a 24:36.
