Bernard D. Miller – Osceola

Bernard D. Miller was born in Osceola, Iowa on September 13, 1943 to Percy and Edna (Luce) Miller and passed from this life at his home in Murray, Iowa, on May 18, 2012, at the age of 68. He is preceded in death by his parents, beloved daughter Tonya and grandson Tanner Matlage. Also preceding Bernie in death are sisters Opal Harrison, Arlene Von Ree, Juanita Robshaw, and Roberta Edwards; brothers Donald and Leo Miller.

Bernie was raised on the family farm north of Murray where he remained living until 1992 when he and wife Sharon moved into Murray. Bernie met Sheri through his older brother Larry and wife Jan. Sheri is the younger sister of Jan. They were united in marriage May 15, 1971. Both couples remained very close throughout Bernie’s life. During the early years of their marriage Bernie and Sheri had two daughters Michele and Tonya. Bernie farmed until the 80’s with his brother Larry. After the two stopped farming they went into business together again and opened a bar in Murray. In 1990, Bernie and Sheri exited the bar business and took over the local grocery store. They ran Miller’s Grocery until the time of their retirement in 2009.

Besides raising his daughters, Bernie had many interests such as hunting, black powder rifles, camping with his family, his dogs Dusty and Oggy. He also enjoyed the company of the family cat Ralph and every cat Bernie had thereafter was named Ralph. He also enjoyed playing 4 point pitch, Larry being his partner, and they seemed to always beat the wives playing the game, although the wives say they cheated!

Bernie will be remembered by his wife Sheri of 41 years, his daughter Michele and son-in-law Mark Matlage; grandkids Michael and Dakota Matlage, Scarlet and Grayson Dustin plus older brother Larry Miller and wife Jan and older sister Twyla and her husband Rich Brown of St. James, Missouri plus many, many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Bernie was cremated per request. Cremation was handled by Cremation Society of Iowa, Clive.
