Nominations sought for Spirit of Osceola awards

Despite the high temperatures and humid weather, many Osceola residents spent the past few weeks working diligently on landscaping projects, finishing up that deck, siding or painting their house or just sprucing up their property. If this describes someone in your neighborhood, you might want to consider nominating them for a Spirit of Osceola award.

The Spirit of Osceola honor has been awarded to local residents who have made positive improvements and maintained their property in a well-kept manner since May. The program, which is run through the City of Osceola has been well received since it got underway earlier this summer.

One month remains in the summer program. Winners will be awarded at the September city council meetings.

The amount of money spent on improvements is not considered in awarding the Spirit of Osceola honor. Instead, the criteria states the use of the property and the compatibility with the neighborhood is considered. Before and after pictures are required for the nomination process.

Spirit of Osceola winners receive $200 in Warrior Bucks, an Osceola Chamber Mainstreet coupon book, smoke detectors and a certificate from the city of Osceola. Winners will also have a sign posted in their yard.

Nominations can be send to Dave Leonard, attention Spirit of Osceola, Osceola City Hall, Osceola, Iowa 50213.

Gov. Terry Branstad released a $25 million education reform package that calls for more rigorous testing of students, higher standards for the state's teaching corps and includes a $10 million statewide literacy initiative. How do you feel about the cost of this plan?
Right now, the state cannot afford to spend $25 million on education reform.
It's $25 million well spent.
I don't care.
