Weldon Alumni pictures
It was announced at the last Weldon Banquet held June 27 this year that the graduation pictures of each class would no longer be displayed in the community center. This has been a tradition since the school closed and the banquets were no longer held at the school. The graduation class pictures were then moved to the community center for display. This has been a source of interest each year for all who attend the banquet. Not just graduates, but also those who ever went to school or lived in Weldon in years past.
Whenever the town of Weldon wanted to start a project, such as restoring the depot, repairing the bandstand and repairing the stained-glass windows of the Methodist Church, the first place the committees turned to was informing everyone of the alumni, and other former Weldon residents. The alumni always came through with generous donations of money and when possible, with time to help. One family of alumni donated $500 just to help get the library started (which is now closed). The community center committee receives donations from memorials and other alumni gifts.
A lot of guests commented on the missing pictures. An announcement was made by the community center committee not to replace the pictures after having the walls painted. Most of the members of the committee have no connection with the school or graduating classes. Several graduates have worked hard to keep the alumni banquet going for the past 40-some years.
Members have always been proud of the community of Weldon and the things that were being done to help it grow. They encouraged people to bring their pictures to be displayed in the community center. A petition was drawn up to have the pictures rehung and over 50 people have signed. There will be many more signatures. This would be of no cost to the community center as people have volunteered to take care of the project.
We appeal to the committee and to the people of Weldon to let the pictures be on display once again, for everyone to enjoy.
