Former Murray school administrator honored
A Woodburn Schools graduate and former Murray school administrator will be among those honored at the State Boys Basketball Tournament this weekend.
Glenn O. Mason will receive a School Administrator Award at halftime of the Class 3A championship game Saturday night in Des Moines.
Mason received his elementary education in the Clarke County rural schools and graduated from Woodburn Schools.
He spent three years in the South Pacific with the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II. Following the war he earned his B.A. degree from Simpson College and began teaching at Lucas, as well as coaching and officiating baseball, softball, and boys’ and girls’ basketball. He also officiated football for many years. He later received his graduate degree from Drake University.
He began in administration at Murray. Overall, he coached and taught for four years and spent 25 years in administration. The school districts of Murray, Tabor (Fremont-Mills) and Lowden (Clarence-Lowden) were reorganized during his tenure in those districts. He implemented programs of football at Murray, golf at Lowden and volleyball at Lowden and Villisca. Following retirement, he became a member of the Chariton School Board.
He currently resides in Bella Vista, Ark.
