A new chief will lead Osceola's Volunteer Fire Department.

Former Chief Donnie McCuddin stepped down at the beginning of March from the position that he has held for nearly 12 years. In McCuddin's resignation letter, he tells the mayor and city council members he wants to pursue other interests.

McCuddin didn't go into detail about his decision, but said he "always enjoyed" his role as chief. He will still be with the department, but in a smaller role.

Mike Henry, 29, will temporarily take over the esteemed position until elections are held in July.

Henry, who has been with the department for 11 years, said he is ready for the challenge, but wasn't sure if he would run for the position in July.

"We'll have to see how it goes," he said. "It will really depend on my work schedule, but I think I have the experience."

Like all the other fire fighters in the department, Henry volunteers his time while juggling a full time job.

Henry said other officers in the department are helping him until he gets his footing,. He will be in full control of the department.

"I think everything will go as smoothly as what it usually does," Henry said. "Donnie said he will help me as I learn the duties. I've already learned a lot from him."

Many of the firefighters said McCuddin's resignation was unexpected.

"It was a surprise to all of us," Chris Reindl said. "But being chief comes with a lot of responsibility and it can be overwhelming."

Mike Fry 2nd Assistant Chief added, "The position takes a lot of time. There's a lot to the job that I don't think people realize. Donnie was up here probably five nights out of the week after work just checking e-mails or doing something. It takes a lot of time to be a fire fighter, but it takes twice that to be a chief."

McCuddin received raving reviews from his colleagues and city council members.

"He took charge every time," Reindl said. "(Henry) has big shoes to fill."
