Tom Murr to be honored this weekend

Seven individuals will be honored by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union at its annual Honors Brunch Saturday at the 2010 Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament.

Among those honored will be former Clarke Community High School athletic director Tom Murr, for his work as a long-time girls’ basketball coach.

The seven honorees are Ankeny’s George Tracy, who will be receiving the Jack North Commemorative Award; Beaconsfield native and current NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who will receive the IGHSAU’s First Lady Award; Murr, the recipient of the Golden Plaque of Distinction Award; Twin Cedars senior Lindsay Hoehns, winner of the 2010 E. Wayne Cooley Scholarship, and the 2010 Iowa Girls Basketball Hall of Fame inductees:  Jennifer Goetz of Keokuk Cardinal Stritch, Molly Tideback of Waterloo Columbus, and Deep River-Millersburg/Montezuma’s Janel Grimm.

The Golden Plaque of Distinction is awarded every year to the superlative Iowa girls basketball coach.

This year’s recipient, Murr, just completed his 39th year of coaching basketball. A builder of programs, Murr coached at Carson-Macedonia, Solon, Waterloo East, Spencer, Dike and East Union. He led Dike to three State Tournament appearances, winning the 1988 six-player championship.

He also was the Athletic Director and softball coach at Clarke, where he won a state crown in 1995.

He currently is the head girls’ basketball coach at East Union High School.

Gov. Terry Branstad released a $25 million education reform package that calls for more rigorous testing of students, higher standards for the state's teaching corps and includes a $10 million statewide literacy initiative. How do you feel about the cost of this plan?
Right now, the state cannot afford to spend $25 million on education reform.
It's $25 million well spent.
I don't care.
