Truro Area News
The big news is the constant falling snow in Iowa. We had snow last Friday and woke up to a light snow on Sunday morning and it lasted all day long. Monday morning it was still snowing but harder and on Monday evening we got that frigid weather again and light snow. Tuesday winds arrived to blow all the new snow around and did cause white out conditions in some areas but not here. The sun according to the weathermen was suppose to shine on Wednesday but hadn’t shown itself until late morning. Up to that point it had been cloudy and, of course, it was snowing again. More snow is predicted for this coming Saturday, too.
My home state of Maryland is really being hammered by a lot of snow. I have been emailing back and forth with close friends that live out there. Their electricity was off for ten hours and now they are getting more snow on top of what they already had received. Some of their snow removal equipment has broken down so that adds to the problem.
The Truro Fire & Rescue Association held a spaghetti & meatball fundraiser on Sunday. From what I understand they had a pretty good turn out considering the fact that snow was falling and the streets were slippery. A special thank you to everyone who made the effort to attend the fundraiser. I know the fire & rescue personnel appreciated it.
Bob & Virginia (Porter) McClelland went to Ames on Saturday to hear their granddaughter, Kate Bedwell, play her saxophone in C. Y. Stephen’s Auditorium for the Iowa State University Honorary Band. She played first chair second part and her grandfather said she did a very good job. There were two bands playing and she played in the Cardinal Band.
Another I-35 student played in the Cardinal Band in Ames along with Kate Bedwell. Ashley Dacus played the flute and she played sixth chair second part. Ashley is the daughter of Bryan & Susan Aller. Congratulations to Kate and Ashley for the honor that was given to both girls. I know we have some proud parents and grandparents.
Garna Rebik had a falling accident and unfortunately suffered some broken bones so will be recuperating in Winterset at the Madison County Memorial Hospital. All cards should be directed there to room 255.
Eldon Schultz is still recovering from his surgery but still having some discomfort.
Isabel Lathrum is still in West Bridge in Winterset. Hopefully she will be back on her feet and home again soon. You know how Isabel loves hearing from her friends so maybe you can call her or drop a card off to her.
Fran Hoffman is in West Bridge also. She is slowly improving. Stop in and see her if you have the opportunity. She loves having visitors. Fran just recently celebrated her birthday on Jan. 25.
On Tuesday, Feb. 9, the I-35 Communication Systems held another one of their computer classes. This class was on spreadsheets. There were six (6) of us that came to class on this cold, windy night. I was glad I attended but it was really hard leaving a warm house to get into a cold car even if it was for only a few blocks!!! These classes have been very helpful and the instructor is very good. If you’re interested in taking any of these classes, please contact Barb Flickinger at the telephone company. These classes are free to everyone even if you aren’t a subscriber to I-35 Communication Systems for internet or cable service. They are held the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m.
Received word that Thelma Armstrong had passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 10. The visitation will be held one hour before the funeral service at Kale Funeral Home in Truro on Saturday, Feb. 20. Burial will be in the Peru cemetery at a later date. Thelma and her husband, Marvin, lived in Truro just south of Helen Elben. Our deepest sympathy is sent to her family and friends.
The Madison-Warren Ecumenical Association will be having a soup supper and it will be held at the Peru United Methodist Church on Friday, Feb. 19.
Interstate 35 School’s annual carnival will be held on Feb. 26 with supper from 5:30-7 p.m. and the games are from 6-8 p.m. Come out and support your school and have fun, too, with your kids.
