CD pounds Wayne twice
The Central Decatur girls' basketball team picked up a pair of easy wins over Wayne last week, including one that kept their season alive.
The Cardinals and Falcons met in a Class 1A first-round Regional contest Saturday night in Leon, just four days after closing out the regular season against each other.
In both games, the Cardinals jumped on top early and were never threatened.
In Saturday night's postseason meeting, the Cardinals led 14-2 at the end of the first quarter and took a 34-6 lead into the half, on their way to a 62-30 victory.
The win sent the Cardinals (15-5) into a Regional quarterfinal contest Tuesday night at home against another Pride of Iowa Conference rival, Interstate 35. The two teams split their two regular season contests. Results from that game will be in next week's paper.
Jenna Lincoln had 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win. Bailie Smith added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Brodi Applegate had 11 points and four steals. Shyanne Masters, Paige Toney and Bailey Boswell added six points each. Toney also had a team-high eight rebounds and six steals.
In the POI finale on Feb. 9, the Cards jumped on top 18-7 and cruised to a 69-23 victory over the Falcons, to finish 10-5 in league play.
Applegate dominated with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Boswell added 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Masters chipped in with nine points and four steals, while Lincoln had seven points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
