CD eliminated at Bloomfield

An up and down season came to a close for the Central Decatur boys' basketball team Monday night in Bloomfield.

The Cardinals had to make the long trip east to take on Davis County in a first-round Class 2A District contest. The Mustangs advanced to the next round with a 66-49 victory.

Davis County jumped out to a 17-4 lead, but the Cardinals had closed to within five at 30-25 by halftime. CD got in foul trouble in the third quarter, committing 13 team fouls. The Mustangs took advantage and pulled away, as the Cardinals never got closer than 15 points in the fourth.

"We played really hard, just missed some shots," CD Coach Zach Clark said. "And they are a good basketball team that keeps the pressure on you the whole game."

Bryson Durrow led the Cardinals with 16 points, while Brent Kline added nine points and seven rebounds. Myles Hanna also scored nine points, Preston Pedersen had six and Devin Brines added five. Kirk Hatfield had six rebounds and two points.

CD finished the season with an 8-12 record.

The Cardinals closed out the regular season Feb. 9 at home with a 63-62 overtime victory against a very good Wayne team. CD lost by 20 to the Falcons earlier in the season.

Kline paced CD with 20 points, while Pedersen and Brines added 14 points each. Pedersen also had a team-high six rebounds, while Sam Smith and Kline pulled down four boards each. Kline also had a team-high three assists and Brines nabbed four steals.

CD finished 6-9 in the Pride of Iowa Conference with the win.

Gov. Terry Branstad released a $25 million education reform package that calls for more rigorous testing of students, higher standards for the state's teaching corps and includes a $10 million statewide literacy initiative. How do you feel about the cost of this plan?
Right now, the state cannot afford to spend $25 million on education reform.
It's $25 million well spent.
I don't care.
