Here it is the first of the week and Iowa has been hit again with a blizzard that wasn’t really suppose to amount to much but did. There are cars all along I-35 in the ditches and travel has not been advised. Fortunately for the kids that go to I-35 school, it was closed for teachers in-service so they didn’t have to be sent home after two hours in school.
Janis Wattonville, who is the daughter of Isabel Lathrum, called to let everyone know that her mom is in Winterset at the West Bridge Nursing Home. She is recuperating after being in the hospital for one week. Janis said that her mom would be there for a couple of months. For all cards please send them to Isabel Lathrum, C/O West Bridge Nursing Home, 1015 W. Summit St., Winterset, IA 50273. I’m sure Isabel would be happy to hear from her friends in and around Truro.
It’s always nice to see neighbors helping neighbors when help is needed. Eldon Schultz has been recovering from knee replacement surgery and unable to get out of the house because of the surgery and with the weather we have been having. A neighbor noticed Eldon hadn’t been out with this tractor moving snow and called. When the neighbor found out the problem, they sent someone to open Eldon’s driveway so Sandy could get out. There have been neighbors bringing the Schultz’s their mail and helping in other ways, too. Eldon should be back on his feet in a few weeks but in the meantime keep praying for him as he is pretty uncomfortable with pain.
Paul Baumgarten son of Earl Baumgarten and Fran Hoffman, is proud as a peacock today as he went to Indianola to take the driving test to get his driver’s license and he passed. Congratulations Paul. I can even remember how that felt when I first got my driver’s license 47 years ago. It’s pretty exciting.
Word was received that a former Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Pastor Francis Crown, had passed away and his funeral was scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Ankeny Baptist Church in Ankeny. He was 87 years old. Pastor Crown was the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church from June of 1985 until September of 1988. He married two of our daughters; one in 1986 and the other in 1988. Both he and Mrs. Crown were very special people. Our deepest sympathy is sent to Mrs. Crown and to all their children and grandchildren.
The Truro Fire & Rescue Association held their first meeting of the New Year on Thursday, Jan. 28, at the fire house with 12 members present. Even though it was a cold night there was a good turnout for the meeting. Association President, Julie (Patton) Morris had several things to discuss. The newly elected treasurer, Abbey Mease, gave the treasurer’s report and also told of a generous donation by John & Mary Brant, She also reported that she had just paid the final payment on the defibrillator. We did receive some help with the total bill from Alliant Energy. One bill was submitted by a rescue/fire personnel person to attend the CIEMS Convention in Feb. All bills were approved.
Julie reminded everyone of the $3000 grant the Association received from the Greater Madison County Development that needs to be used by May for the new building. It was to be used for new cement on the approach to the fire house but our weather has postponed that and we’ll now have to wait till spring.
There was discussion on the new members receiving polo shirts for dress up occasions and also purchasing newer and better jackets for members. They have had the old ones for quite a while and they are starting to look a little worn.
The contract with the band known as the Flying Silos had come with some of the requirements listed for them the night they play at the street dance in August.
Jim Mease had a request that a rescue rope be purchased for the department as it was needed. It was voted to purchase the rope.
Sarah has been working hard on making a list of what we will need for the spaghetti & meatball fundraiser and also a list of times for helpers to help. She also has been working on a calendar of events for the year for the department so we know when things will be going on and plan for them ahead of time.
Another Texas Hold Em Tournament is planned for Saturday, March 20, at the Truro Lions Hall. More info to follow later.
Julie reminded everyone about the Betterment Committee’s Valentine dinner and dance and also selling calendars.
It was decided that each month a different officer would go over the accounts, bills, etc with the treasurer. This way there are no mistakes and everyone is abreast of what is to be done and how.
Following the Association meeting, the fire & rescue held their meeting.
The Madison-Warren Ecumenical Association will be having a soup supper and it will be held at the Peru United Methodist Church on Friday, Feb. 19.
A spaghetti fundraiser will be on Feb. 7 at the Truro Lion’s Hall. Dinner will be served from 11a.m.-1 p.m. It will be sponsored by the Truro Fire & Rescue Association.
The Betterment Committee is planning a Valentine’s Dinner on Feb. 13 from 5-8 p.m. at the Truro Lion’s Hall. The cost of the meal will be $15 per person or $25 a couple. Dance to Terre Haute from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Call Jennifer Collins to purchase your dinner tickets in advance at 515-975-2148. Tickets are also available for purchase from any Betterment Committee member. To attend the dance is $7 per person or $10 a couple.
If you need a 2010 Calendar, the Truro Betterment Committee members are selling some for $8.00. They have wonderful pictures of improvements that have been made on Main Street, Ragbrai, etc.
