Truro news

By Mary Lou Parker

A new committee has been formed and met for the first time last Thursday at city hall. This group will be working with SICOG (Southern Iowa Council of Governments) and will be volunteering their time to help in a housing rehabilitation grant for Truro.

They will help in the overseeing of an economical development grant from SICOG. Members of this committee are Lindsay (Burhans) Cannoy, Patrick Ekleberry, Bobbie Finley, Helen (Lamb) Lorenzen and Dean Parker. We thank them for their interest and help. The representative from SICOG asked the group what Truro had in the way of committees, organizations, etc. It was amazing how many were mentioned. I believe even they were amazed at all that was mentioned like businesses, the school, two churches, a fairly new post office, Fire & Rescue Department, organizations, & committees, etc. A couple of months ago it was posted and asked in the city’s water bills if anyone was interested in applying for a grant that would help with remodeling, new wiring, or new windows for their homes that they pick up an application and return it to city hall by a certain date to apply for this grant. There were several who applied. I wish all of them the best.

Calvary Baptist Church of St. Charles held a Jewish Mission’s Conference last Sunday. Their special speaker from the International Board of Jewish Missions was Mr. John Lord. He began by serving Jewish bread to everyone before the first service in the Fellowship Hall. During the first service Mr. Lord explained the Jewish Holiday called Passover and he explained what it meant and what the Jewish faith did at their Passover supper. There was a table set up in the front of the church as would take place in a Jewish home during Passover. After a brief break a second service was held and Mr. Lord explained the Jewish faith more and how he was called into this ministry. There was a lunch held after the services where they served Jewish food and it was delicious. After lunch we watched a video called, “The Survivors Story”. It showed four Jewish people who had lived through the Holocaust and what they had seen and endured. It was such an interesting day and the video just made your heart ache for these people.

Eldon & Sandy (Schamerhorn) Schultz and Dean & Mary Lou Parker went to Indianola on Oct. 26, to hear the Bob Jones University String Orchestra perform at the Indianola Regular Baptist Church. There were about 30 young people and two teachers playing in the orchestra. Dr. Michael Moore is the director of the string orchestra and Dr. Ed Dunbar, who is head of the organ department and University Organist, played the organ for the group. He played that organ like I have never heard an organ played before and those young people did a fantastic job playing all those instruments. They really sounded good. The Schultzs and the Parkers thoroughly enjoyed themselves. After the performance the church served cookies and punch in the church's basement.

On Tuesday the Truro Betterment Committee held an open house at the Lion’s Hall for the candidates running for city council and mayor.

On Oct, 28, the Truro United Methodist Church had a dinner and a bake sale.

The Truro Fire & Rescue Association held their regular monthly meeting on Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. at the fire station. Eleven members were present. The band that some of the members went to hear was discussed. They are planning to have the “Flying Silos” play for next year’s street dance & dinner.

Fire Chief Jeremy Ransom discussed the remodeling and addition that is to be put on the fire house. Because of the rainy weather we have been experiencing, the project will have to start next spring. He said he is still talking with the representative from the USDA, the fire department’s lawyer, Heidi, and the council. The architect and Chet Darst need to get together to go over finalization plans. The fire & rescue personnel need to have a wish list of some things that they would like the new building to have. Some of the wishes might have to wait until a later time.

The Texas Hold 'Em Fundraiser has been postponed until next year in March and a meatball and spaghetti dinner is being planned for Feb. 6 of next year. The Truro Betterment Committee is putting together a welcome basket for new people moving into Truro. It was suggested that perhaps a letter of welcome be written by the Fire Chief and Rescue Captain. Election of officers will be next month. If you can’t make the Nov. 19 meeting, pick up your nomination papers on Nov. 5 during the training meeting. Meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.

Nov. 10 will be the next regular meeting of the Truro Betterment Committee. They meet at 7 p.m. in the Truro Public Library. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Don’t forget to remember our veterans on Nov. 11. We appreciate all our veterans and all the men and women in the Armed Forces serving today all over the world.

The Interstate 35 Communications Systems will hold their third class on helping you to know your computer on Nov. 10. It starts at 7 p.m. at the telephone office’s meeting room.  There are six classes and they are held on the second Tuesday of each month.

The Truro Lions will be holding their Saturday breakfast into November. On the first and third Saturday in November the breakfast will be held from 7:30-9:30 a.m.

St. Charles Parish Church will be holding a bake sale & bazaar on Nov. 14, from 7-11 a.m. It will be held in the Parish Fellowship Hall. There will be a drawing for a homemade quilt.  Tickets are available at Montross Pharmacy, Farmers & Merchants Bank in St. Charles and at the bazaar.

The Truro Betterment Committee’s annual Holiday Bazaar will be held on Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers are needed to make cookies and candies for the bazaar so please contact Jennifer Collins or Michell Sciarrotta if you can help out this year. They are also looking for anyone interested in entering their homes for a Christmas Tour of Homes. This would take place at the same time that the Lions will be having Santa Claus visit the Truro Lions Hall in December. If you are interested in entering, please give Jennifer a call at 515-975-2148 by Nov. 30.

The Trunk & Treat held on Oct. 24 in the high school student parking lot was once again a big success. It rained on the kids just a little, but don’t think they noticed. Thank you to everyone who took part in this.

Gov. Terry Branstad released a $25 million education reform package that calls for more rigorous testing of students, higher standards for the state's teaching corps and includes a $10 million statewide literacy initiative. How do you feel about the cost of this plan?
Right now, the state cannot afford to spend $25 million on education reform.
It's $25 million well spent.
I don't care.
